Brown shadows follow white

Moons full of mysteries,

Weightless rising toward the light.

They are the ghosts of campfire sights,

Hiding on the skin of birch trees.

Brown shadows follow white.

Industrial ash, pollution, blight,

Made air and earth a disease –

Weightless rising toward the light.

Betrayed by soot, they are too bright.

Their wings have made them mockeries

Brown shadows follow white,

Pursuing birds shadow their flight.

Their life is forfeit , and spirit flees

Weightless, rising toward the light.

Now they adapt to their plight

With camouflage no one will see:

Brown shadows follow white,

Weightless, rising toward the light.
