Shoulders rounded in defeat

Homeless hungry weak

Tattooed on each arm

Wreaths for

Luke and Duke.

On 86th and Lex

he spreads his cardboard slate

Head buried in his arms

longside the steamy grate

Stares at the moon

Warbles song

Each breath

Each thought

Each dream

Awash in wintery floes.

Awake at dawn

Awake the morn

Stiffened back

Stiffened toes

He’ll bump his wobbly cart

Past the children’s park

Stop to pet a mangy dog

That licks his veteran hand.
