in the 1960s mini-theatres
were big
in Amsterdam
and everyone who was no-one
performed there
at night

that afternoon
in one mini-theatre
on the steps of a narrow
flight of stairs
she sat
forehead on knees
hair shrouding shins
hands on top of her skull
pale fungus on dark soil

the fat man with the moustache
in charge of mini-management
pointed her out with a flick
of his round head
explaining her presence on the stairs
by declaring her to have made love to eight
successive males
earlier

the stairway must have had more
than eight steps
not one of them
leading to heaven
